Brazos Bend Bass

Here are some bass I caught on my trip to Brazos Bend last week. Thought I would show before and afer filleting. Will be back to Brazos Bend soon for three days camping and fishing. Would like to catch some catfish out of the river, but not holding my breath.

Goose Island State Park/Ingleside Naval Station

Augie and I returned from from a long fishing day in the Aransas Pass area Saturday night. We had a great time fishing, but didn't return with anything worth keeping. Here is the pier we fished off of in the morning. We were going to go wade fishing, but ran into a bad case of common sense, and decided to fish the pier instead. The fishing at GISP was very slow, but we managed to catch the first fish of '09 there.

Pier at Goose Island State Park.

First fish of '09, flathead catfish, Goose Island State Park. Multiply this fish by 20 and you see how our day went.

Augie catches the his first of many flathead catfish.

After spending the morning at GISP, we decided to ask the locals where a good spot would be, and we got a tip about Ingleside Naval Station. We asked around and found a good spot on a pier at Ingleside. We fished the rest of the day there and caught flatheads until closing time at 9PM. No pictures from Ingleside as the Navy yard we were fishing would not allow photos for security reasons.

Now the story about the one that got away--I managed to hook a redfish (Augie says it was about 6-8 pounds, I say it was about 8-10) and get it up to the surface near the pier. I tried to keep it from going under the pier, it made a sharp left turn and the line snapped. Moral of the story, always bring a net!

While we were there, we found out that although the fishing in this area stops at 9PM, you can gig for flounder there all night. We hope to do that sometime soon. All in all it was a good day fishing. We haven't planned our next expidition yet, but I think maybe we will try Brazos Bend.

NaCl H2O

I have a little time this weekend and hope to go out and try some salt water fishing here:

Augie and I are going to leave very early Saturday morning and try to get to Goose Island State Park when it opens. We hope to try the jetties and maybe the salt marshes there. Will be happy with Redfish, sheephead, flounder, speckled trout or anything else that decides to fall to our trickery. I will report back with news and plenty of pictures. With any luck there will be some pictures of actual fish to share.

Brazos Bend/Houston Visit

We had a very nice visit in Houston last weekend. We got to see Joann, Josh, Amanda, Darrell, Brent and Desi, as well as Maddy and Cadence. Aunt Lauri was there too, and we all had a great time. I was able to get out to Brazos Bend on Saturday by myself and with Darrell on Sunday. We managed to catch a few nice bass, but only one that was of legal keeping size, so it received a reprieve. We stayed up late Saturday night and played Apples to Apples, Taboo and watching the Dallas Stars. The Dallas Cowboys fiasco wasn't until later. Mom fixed a feast of Roast Beast, mashed potatoes and lemon pies, I had more than my share. The youngsters went "honky tonkin' " Saturday night. Us old fogies stayed home and had a good time playing games and having fun.

Obligatory pictures:

Only catfish I caught out of the Brazos River--not much to write home about.

BRAZOS BEND WEEKEND

Went fishing yesterday and today with Mom at Brazos Bend State Park. Yesterday she caught the two nice bass (pictured below) on consecutive casts. A cold front came through mid-morning today and we decided to give the fish a reprieve. We drove around the park and looked for future fishing spots and found some nice places for camping.

Old Fishing Photos

After spending the weekend fishing at Brazos Bend, I finally finished the roll on an outdoor camera that has been laying around for a couple of months, and I wanted to get them posted. Here are some from Calaveras:
